HISPANIA F110 Cosworth

   In 2009, the FIA, under the leadership of Max Mosley, launched a tender process to admit new teams to the 2010 Formula One World Championship, promoting a cost cap set at £40 million. Former Spanish racing driver Adrián Campos, together with sports marketing agency Meta Image, founded Campos Meta 1 and secured one of the four available entries. Lacking the facilities required to build a Formula One car from scratch, Campos entrusted the design and construction of the chassis to the Italian manufacturer Dallara, marking the company's return to Formula One for the first time since 1992, when it had produced the cars for BMS Scuderia Italia. In November, Brazilian driver Bruno Senna was announced as the team's first official driver. His famous surname (the son of Viviane, Ayrton Senna's sister) was deliberately chosen to attract sponsors and media attention. However, the proposed budget cap was ultimately abandoned due to opposition from the major manufacturers within the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA). Without the spending limit, many of the sponsors who had pledged support to Campos withdrew, leaving the team without the funds needed to pay Dallara for completing the car. As a result, the project was unable to participate in any pre-season testing. Less than one month before the opening Grand Prix in Bahrain, Spanish businessman José Ramón Carabante acquired Adrián Campos' shares in the team. The outfit was subsequently renamed Hispania Racing F1 Team (HRT), and part of the outstanding payments owed to Dallara were finally made. Nevertheless, the lengthy payment delays severely damaged the relationship between HRT and the Italian constructor from the outset. Consequently, the Hispania F110 received virtually no aerodynamic development throughout the entire 2010 season. The car also lacked major sponsorship and appeared in an anonymous dark grey livery featuring yellow, white and red stripes along its sides.

Monza, Italian GP 2010

   Born under extreme time pressure less than a month before the championship began, the team did not possess a conventional in-house design department but instead relied on an emergency operational structure. Team Principal Colin Kolles was well known throughout the Formula One paddock as a specialist in crisis management, having previously led Jordan, Midland, Spyker and Force India. He brought his own technical and logistical organisation, Kolles Racing, based in Germany, to run the team on a day-to-day basis. One of HRT's most significant appointments was undoubtedly Geoff Willis, an experienced engineer who had served as Technical Director at Williams, Honda and Red Bull. Hired in March 2010, after the season had already begun, Willis joined as a technical consultant in an attempt to understand how to improve and refine the F110 despite the team's almost non-existent financial and technical resources. The entire design and manufacturing process took place at Dallara's headquarters in Varano de' Melegari, near Parma. The project was led by Chief Designer Luca Pignatta, assisted by former Minardi Technical Director Gabriele Tredozi, who was recruited by Dallara to provide valuable Formula One experience. Ben Agathangelou, previously with Jaguar and Red Bull, was appointed Chief Aerodynamicist, overseeing both aerodynamic development and wind tunnel testing before Hispania's financial difficulties brought all payments to a halt. Trackside engineering personnel largely consisted of individuals with little or no Formula One experience, with a few notable exceptions. Toni Cuquerella served as Chief Race Engineer, bringing experience from SEAT Sport as well as brief spells with Super Aguri and BMW Sauber, while Mark Slade had previously worked as Kimi Räikkönen's race engineer at McLaren. Following the breakdown in relations with Dallara, final assembly and spare parts management were transferred to Kolles Racing's German facilities, supported by external suppliers such as Xtrac for the gearbox and Cosworth for the engine.

Melbourne, Australian GP 2010 

   Designed on an extremely limited budget and under exceptionally tight deadlines, the F110 emerged with an intentionally simplified aerodynamic philosophy aimed at providing only the minimum aerodynamic efficiency while remaining manageable for a brand-new team. The inevitable consequence was a severe lack of downforce. The front wing featured a very basic main plane and equally simple flow-conditioning elements. All of the complex aerodynamic appendages and vortex generators used by the leading teams to direct airflow around the front wheels were absent. The most distinctive styling feature of the F110 was its high nose incorporating a pronounced V-shaped channel along the upper surface, partially reflecting the design trend introduced by the 2009 Red Bull RB5. The sidepods were equally straightforward, with large, square-shaped radiator inlets and a highly conventional external profile. Unlike the leading teams, which sculpted deep undercuts beneath the sidepods to optimise airflow towards the rear of the car, the F110 featured flat, minimally undercut surfaces. This compromised rear aerodynamic efficiency in favour of ensuring reliable cooling for the Cosworth V8 engine. The rear end was equally basic, employing a conventional diffuser that was only later modified to accommodate a rudimentary interpretation of the double diffuser concept. However, the packaging of the Xtrac gearbox and the push-rod rear suspension prevented engineers from creating sufficiently large airflow channels beneath the car. The result was an extremely unstable rear end under braking and significantly lower cornering grip than its competitors. The greatest aerodynamic weakness of the F110, however, was not simply its modest initial specification but the complete absence of development throughout the season. When HRT terminated its contract with Dallara in May 2010 due to financial difficulties, all Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) work and wind tunnel development immediately ceased. Consequently, the car that competed in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was aerodynamically identical to the one that had debuted in Bahrain eight months earlier.

Montecarlo, Monaco GP 2010 

   Although severely limited aerodynamically, the Hispania F110 featured a relatively solid and conventional mechanical package. Like the other two new teams, it was powered by the Cosworth CA2010 V8, an inexpensive customer engine that was not among the most powerful on the grid but proved robust and economical to operate. However, the relatively high fuel consumption of the British V8 required engineers to fit an unusually large fuel tank, holding approximately 200 litres. This significantly increased the car's starting weight and placed considerable stress on the rear mechanical components. Unable to design its own transmission, Hispania purchased the Xtrac 1044 gearbox, a seven-speed semi-automatic sequential unit housed in an aluminium and titanium casing. Both front and rear suspensions employed conventional double wishbones actuated by push-rods, with dampers and anti-roll bars mounted above the chassis at the front and above the gearbox at the rear. The suspension's overall stiffness provided good stability over kerbs and respectable structural durability. However, the absence of sophisticated interconnected suspension systems or advanced pitch-control solutions made the car particularly rigid and difficult to balance on bumpy circuits or tracks characterised by high tyre degradation. Nevertheless, the mechanical package ultimately proved to be the strongest aspect of Dallara's entire project. Despite having completed no pre-season testing whatsoever, the F110 suffered remarkably few retirements caused by mechanical failures compared with its direct rivals.

Hungaroring, Hungarian GP 2010

   The Hispania F110's performances were inevitably shaped by its troubled development programme. The car was clearly the slowest machine on the grid, consistently occupying the final rows of qualifying while nevertheless demonstrating surprisingly solid race reliability during the second half of the championship. Alongside Bruno Senna, the second race seat initially went to Indian driver Karun Chandhok, who was replaced midway through the season by Japan's Sakon Yamamoto, while Austrian Christian Klien also appeared in three Grands Prix. Qualifying performances were predictably poor, with the F110 trailing the leading teams by enormous margins (8.7 seconds in Bahrain, 7.1 seconds in Barcelona, and typically between four and five seconds at most other circuits). During races, however, the neutral chassis balance and suspension geometry developed by Dallara proved relatively gentle on the tyres, enabling drivers to extend their stints and occasionally gain positions over their direct competitors through strategy. Despite not completing a single kilometre of pre-season testing, the F110 displayed one unexpected strength: reliability. From only the third race of the season, in Malaysia, both cars consistently reached the finish. Across 38 race starts (19 Grands Prix with two cars), the F110 recorded only 12 retirements, a significantly better figure than Virgin Racing's 19 retirements. Combined with HRT's superior race results, this allowed the Spanish team to avoid finishing last in the Constructors' Championship.
