TYRRELL 007 Ford-Cosworth DFV

After the immense success of the 006 between 1972 and 1974, the Tyrrell Racing Organisation had to completely redesign the car, entrusting Derek Gardner once again with the development of the new Tyrrell 007. This new model was a direct evolution of the outdated 006, which was no longer competitive against rival cars.

Powered by the traditional 2993cc Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine and featuring a five-speed Hewland FG 400 gearbox, the 007 was built with an aluminum monocoque chassis. The front suspension consisted of rocker arms with double wishbones, while the rear suspension had a similar layout but without rocker arms, and both featured inboard shock absorbers. The car had a wheelbase of 2591mm and weighed 625kg. Its design closely resembled that of McLaren and Ferrari, abandoning the distinctive "snowplow" front wing typical of earlier Tyrrell models and adopting a slimmer, more compact airbox compared to previous versions.

The new car debuted at the 1974 Spanish Grand Prix, driven by South African Jody Scheckter and Frenchman Patrick Depailler. It won races in Sweden and Britain that season and helped the team secure third place in the constructors' championship. For the 1975 season, Tyrrell retained both drivers, continuing to use the 007 from the previous year with minimal modifications, as Gardner was focused on developing the future P34, the famous six-wheeled Tyrrell. In 1975, the 007 claimed one victory with Scheckter, one second-place finish, and two third-place finishes, earning the team 25 points and securing fifth place in the championship. That year, the car was also driven on two occasions by French drivers Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Michel Leclère, though neither achieved notable results.

After the revolutionary Tyrrell P34 was introduced, the 007 was used only by private teams in Formula 1, as had already happened at the 1975 South African Grand Prix, where the Blignaut Lexington Racing team entered a 007 for Jody Scheckter's brother, Jan. In 1976, the 007 was used in four races by the private Scuderia Gulf Rondini, driven by Alessandro Pesenti-Rossi, and in the season finale at the Fuji circuit, the Japanese team Heroes Racing entered a 007 for local driver Kazuyoshi Hoshino.

After qualifying an impressive 11th, Hoshino managed to climb to third place during the race before a tire issue forced him to retire. Throughout 1976, Scheckter and Depailler continued to race the 007 under the Tyrrell team colors until the Spanish Grand Prix, achieving strong results—especially Depailler, who secured podium finishes in Brazil and Long Beach, proving the strength of the 007's design.
