TYRRELL 011 '82 Ford-Cosworth DFV

Without an adequate budget to design a new car, Ken Tyrrell’s team entered the 1982 season with the same Tyrrell 011 that had already appeared in the second half of the previous season. The car was designed by technical director Maurice Philippe in collaboration with chief designer Brian Lisles, built around an aluminum monocoque chassis that was further reinforced and lightened for the ’82 season thanks to honeycomb panels.

The double-wishbone suspension system remained the same as in 1981, as did the 3-liter Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine coupled with a Hewland FGA 400 gearbox. The wheelbase also remained unchanged at 2692 mm, while the weight dropped slightly to the minimum limit of 585 kg.

For the season opener in Kyalami, South Africa, the team fielded Italian Michele Alboreto, driving a completely blue car with no sponsors, and Swedish driver Tommy "Slim" Borgudd, also in a sponsor-less, all-white car. From the third race at Imola, Borgudd was replaced by British driver Brian Henton, and the Tyrrell team finally secured a sponsor: Italian company Candy, whose logo appeared on the sides of the 011, albeit for just one race.

Starting from the Monza GP, the car's livery changed to all green, reflecting a new financial partnership with Denim. In the final race of the season in Las Vegas, Alboreto pulled off an unexpected win, and along with other points finishes throughout the season, helped Tyrrell secure sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship with 25 points.

The new financial backing and strong results in 1982 allowed the historic British team to plan the development of a new car with promising design prospects for the 1983 season.
